Accommodation in Vuotso

Vuotso is a great place to stay if you want to go hiking in Koilliskaira, Urho Kekkonen National Park, or the Sompio Strict Nature Reserve area. For example, the Tankavaara Experience and Conference Center offers four different nature trails ranging from 1 to 7 kilometers in length. In winter, these same trails are suitable for snowshoeing. The distance from Vuotso to Tankavaara is about 10 kilometers.

Those looking for a longer hike should head east from Vuotso village toward the Sompio Nature Reserve area. There, routes like the Pyhä-Nattanen trail and Ruijanpolku  (Ruija trail) offer challenging paths and breathtaking scenery. Ruijanpolku is part of the Ruija route, which is said to have been one of the oldest trade routes in the north.

On the shores of Lake Sompiojärvi, there lived in the 1600s the legendary, powerful Lapland shaman Akmeeli. Visiting the long-lived and mighty shaman’s grave is only allowed by water. From the boat launch at Lake Sompiojärvi, it’s a short paddle to the grave.

Those who intend to visit the grave should follow the guidelines, for a raven keeps watch and a wolf howls in the wind if the peace of the buried is not respected.
