Experience Ivalo

The annual Inari Weeks held at the end of July culminate in the WaterCross event, where snowmobiles race along the Ivalo River. This originally small-scale competition has grown into a real festival event, with participants coming from as far as Norway and Sweden.

Did you know, by the way, that Ivalo’s swimming beach with its sandy beach rivals Kalajoki? The Ivalo River has a sandy bottom and is quite shallow in places, so the water is suitable for swimming even during summer heat.

Travelers interested in architecture should head to admire the Lutheran church of Ivalo. The church, which resembles a ski jump, was designed by chief architect Kauko Kokko and architect Laura Järvi-Larkas. Remember to peek inside as well, because the interior spaces of the church, designed in a very modernist style in the 1960s, differ from traditional wooden churches, and even the altar cross is a glass artwork.

Ivalo past and present

Originally Ivalo was known as Kyrö village, as it was founded by Henrik Kyrö along the Ivalo River in 1750. Recently, Ivalo has been made known by, among other things, the TV series Ivalo.

Ivalo is also Finland’s northernmost location where you can complete military service. The Lapland Border Guard participates in national defense by maintaining defense readiness and training conscripts for the border troops reserve. In Ivalo, there is a border jaeger company, also called a guerrilla company, where conscripts participate in versatile reconnaissance training.
