Tips for travelling with a pet in Lapland

Lapland is an especially rewarding destination for a dog owner. The wilderness is vast and open, there are practically endless walking routes, and you can bring your dog along on most nature trails. Here are a few practical tips for planning your trip.

Everyman’s rights apply to dogs too. You can take your dog into the forest, but keeping it on a leash is recommended, especially when encountering reindeer and other wildlife. In Urho Kekkonen National Park, dogs must be kept leashed between 1 June and 31 August due to the wildlife nesting season.

Reserve a spot for your pet in advance. Not all accommodations automatically accept pets, so the pets allowed filter in the booking system is a handy way to find the right option right at the start of your search.

Take weather conditions into account. The weather in Lapland varies greatly with the seasons. In winter, the cold can be severe, so your dog’s paws and tolerance for low temperatures are worth considering when planning outdoor routes.
